61) Life Happened!

When did life get so complicated?

Then we would meet multiple times a year,

Vacations stretched endlessly,

As we played, travelled, laughed, cried & fought together;

Today we live separated by miles, oceans & continents,

Connected irregularly through chats & video calls,

Grappling to match time zones for even one call together.

 

When did life get so different?

It seems just yesterday when we were fighting over little things,

Teasing & troubling each other at every opportunity,

Yet imploring our parents for just one more day together;

Today the fights have ceased, who has the time?

And no matter how much we plead,

The flights won’t yield, refusing even the slightest delay for our sake.

 

How did life change in the blink of an eye?

How often we would head out to meet each other for every little occasion,

Spend time giggling in a corner over silly things,

Share small secrets that would seem so important at that time;

Today we schedule meetups like appointments,

Trying to find a few hours common to all within life & work commitments,

Struggling to get just a summary of life updates in the limited time available.

 

Yes life happened – Swiftly, brutally and mercilessly so,

When once the time together seemed eternal,

Today we spend years waiting, planning & scheduling,

Only to make peace with the little time we manage to get with each other,

Time that can sometimes be counted on fingers of a single hand;

Somewhere, somehow in midst of these 2 extremes of our life,

While our bond remained unchanged, the time passed & we have grown up!

66) Happy Independence?

Happy Independence Day A wish that feels hollow & empty to me today as a woman! As even today, 77 yrs later, it is a woman who is questioned  No matter how heinous the crime, the victim is at fault Because she has no freedom of clothing, of work, of time, of location, No matter how free the country is, she is restricted If not by her family, then by the society, by her own fear of safety. Today I am lucky Yes lucky - because I've the freedom of life, of work, of speech, of choice And I'm lucky that I get these basic needs which are every person's right  But the freedom from fear - who can grant me that? The curfew & restrictions on me ? I doubt it! Because if they can breach places of love, of work, of worship, They can breach those curfews Because the problem is not me! 6) That Little Bird

A little bird on my window sill, chirping its sweet song, So pretty was it that my eyes followed him along, As it hopped and twittered around, I couldn’t take my eyes off him, And when he sang a melody aloud my heart was filled with happiness to the brim.   He was a brown, chubby, tiny little thing, with a sharp, long beak, And he looked at me with his beady black eyes as if willing me to speak, And speak I did, quite involuntarily though, the words just came from my mouth, “Oh!
